Davidoff Limited Edition 2023 Year of the Rabbit

The Davidoff Zodiac Series is a yearly release of cigars that used to consist of one cigar per year, but for the past couple of years, it has been two. Along with the regular Year of the Rabbit cigar, Davidoff also produces a limited number of Masterpiece Humidors for each release. The humidors contain cigars that use the same blend as the regular cigar but are offered in a different vitola. For the Year of the Rabbit release, Davidoff announced that it would create a Rabbit-themed Masterpiece humidor that contains a 6 x 56 toro extra version of the blend. The same vitola is also sold in boxes exclusively at Davidoff of Geneva flagship stores under the name Davidoff Limited Edition 2023 Year of the Rabbit Flagship Exclusive. The blend features an Ecuadorian hybrid 238 wrapper, a Mexican San Andrés negro binder, and five fillers, four of which are from the Dominican Republic, and one from Estelí, Nicaragua. Davidoff states that the average age of the filler tobacco is four and a half years.

Upon inspection, the cigars seem to be lighter than expected, with a good amount of red breaking through the brown wrapper color, and a supple texture. However, there are minor aesthetic issues, such as a nasty-looking vein and mild discoloration. The aroma of the wrapper gives off a potato roll scent with some acidity, while the foot has a more intense aroma of redwood, brownie, red apple, and a hint of acidity. Cold draws reveal milky creaminess, grain flavors, red apple skin, floral notes, and acidity.

Upon lighting, the cigar offers a smooth and vibrant start with flavors of sweet creaminess, floral notes, and bread, leading to Spanish cedar and mild fruity sweetness. The sourdough bread mixes with flavors of redwood and oak, accompanied by secondary notes of oats, white pepper, peach sweetness, floral notes, and mild meatiness. The finish has a slight generic harshness, with flavors of sourdough bread, sawdust, egg noodles, and mild saltiness, along with a red pepper and toastiness in the retrohale. The flavor is almost full, the body is medium-full, and the strength is medium. Construction is decent, with minor issues such as a slightly loose draw, uneven burn, and hot burn.

The final third of the Davidoff Limited Edition 2023 Year of the Rabbit Flagship Exclusive sees the return of the redwood flavors from the first third, now accompanied by a slightly sweet nuttiness, floral flavors, and a more aggressive metallic harshness. The bread flavors have toned down significantly, but still remain present. Secondary notes include a slight citrus fruitiness, more white pepper, some hay, and a slightly bitter nuttiness. The finish is a mix of metallic harshness, bread flavors, and a subtle lemon sweetness. Retrohales continue to offer a more intense flavor profile, with white pepper, toastiness, and lavender leading, followed by red pepper and floral notes. The burn line has evened out, but the cigar still burns slightly hotter than I’d like. The ash continues to impress with its formation and longevity. Flavor is medium-full, body is full, and strength is medium.

Overall, the Davidoff Limited Edition 2023 Year of the Rabbit Flagship Exclusive offers an enjoyable smoking experience with a good amount of complexity and balance. While there were some minor construction issues and a slight inconsistency in the flavors, it is still a well-made and flavorful cigar. The price point is on the high side, but for those who can afford it, it’s a worthwhile investment in a limited edition smoke.
